First of all, it is with a mixture of deep sadness and joy that our Director of Faith Formation for adults and the RCIA will be retiring at the end of this month to spend more time with her family and finally get some rest from the rigors of ministry these past 20 or more years. Sandra Bonilla and I go way back to our St. Jerome days in Largo when I was a young administrator and she was in charge of the Religious Education program there. I had always admired Sandra's passion for God and when I had heard that she moved to the New Tampa area, I was thrilled that she would be coming to work with us. While here, she has done marvelous things with our program and has made it into the top programs in the Diocese. Now that she is a grandmother and a caretaker for her family, she certainly will need the added time to rest and recharge to accomplish her new duties. She will continue to stay a member of St. Mark and will use her time and talents to help in our Faith Formation program when she is able. Join me in thanking Sandra for her wonderful contributions to our great parish in the years she has been with us. God speed Sandra!

In some other good news, our Director of Faith Formation for Children, Claudia Garcia, has earned her degree from the Diocesan Lay Pastoral Institute! It has been a four year process in which she took a full load at school, took care of her children, and also worked full-time here at St. Mark. It just goes to show what intelligence and determination can get you when you put your faith in God. Congratulations Claudia!

As you know, David Larson has come on board to become our Parish Administrator and already he has done great things for our parish and our staff cohesion. David is a marvelous man and a great organizer and I am thrilled that he has become such an integral part of our parish. I look forward to even greater things to come!

Due to all the restructuring in our parish staff, I am sad to say that we will NOT be having Summer Bible School for this year. As you know, this takes a great deal of coordination and logistics to pull off and we just didn't have the personnel to make it happen with the quality of earlier years. I promise that next year we will be introducing a new summer program that I think will be a very effective tool for further education of our young. Stay tuned for more details in the coming months.

Last but not least, I have been heartened by the amount of people coming forward to involve themselves in the life of our parish! This is truly Stewardship in action and what a parish should be when it comes to serving God and our neighbor. Why don't some of you step forward and GET INVOLVED! I have found that many of our new ministry members come out of Christ Renews His Parish which is a weekend retreat held here at the parish. I know there is a weekend for men and women coming in July so those of you who have been sitting on the fence with their relationship with God, come and experience this spiritual event. You won't regret it!

Well that is all for now. Continue to enjoy the gift that God gives us in each other.

Peace,

Fr. Will power only works for so long. Eventually we are worn down and we are back to square one. If we want REAL change we need to rely instead on God's Power. For as it says in Romans 8:32: "If God is for us, who can be against us?"

When God is on our side we can act boldly and with out fear. In 2 Timothy 1:7, Paul tells us: "For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love".

I urge you to NOT try to fight your way though life on your own. Instead, trust in our loving God and become a part of His plan for you. Ask God to fill you with His love because, as we read in 1 John 4:18, "There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear".

When we let go of our fears and we truly trust in God, we become free to follow the advice of Blessed John Paul II when he said: "Do not be afraid. Do not be satisfied with mediocrity. Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch."

Peace,
<img style="text-align: left;" name="ACCOUNT.IMAGE.15" alt="Fr. If you would like to share your thoughts with the parish, please email them, along with a photo of your family toBulletin@stmarktampa.org

Hello fellow Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Today I would like to share a personal story of one of many of God’s miracles in my life.

We all want our Church to be built and I know pledging and sacrificing is not always easy. But having the faith and trust in God is our first step.

After I had made my pledge to our capital campaign I stretched a bit as I am asking all of you to do. A few weeks had gone by and I received a call from an insurance investigator inquiring about an aunt of mine that had passed away.

I had taken care of my aunt in her later years when she had difficulty taking care of herself. My aunt never had an abundant amount of money although she did fine and lived a simple life. After she passed away I did what I could to take care of her business.

Unexpectedly I received a letter just a few days later from the insurance investigator that had called me. I opened the letter and to my surprise there was a check in the envelope, my aunt had a small insurance policy that no one knew about. The check in the envelope was for the exact amount of money that I had pledged a few weeks prior. As I looked at the check I was quiet for a moment… God does provide. Take the step and trust in our Lord. He works in marvelous ways.

May God continue to bless you and your family abundantly.

Peace,

Fr. David

“Entrust your works to the Lord, and your plans will succeed.”

- Proverbs 10:3

Fr. Now I can silence my critics and carry on with my desire to play on the pro tour when I'm 60 years old. I figure by that time, we will have the Church built and it will be able to run itself!

Speaking of the new Church, we are in full swing in making this dream a reality. Many of you have come forward in making a financial commitment to the Campaign and helping procure pledges. We are still in need of more people to make calls and write letters so if you are able to come forward, it will be deeply appreciated. PLEASE, when our volunteers call about the campaign, please respond in a reasonable time so we can keep moving forward to reach more people in our congregation. I have been deeply touched by the many families who have come forward already in making this sacrificial commitment. It only goes to show what a great community we have so if you haven't been contacted yet, I pray that God will touch your heart to commit to this significant moment in our parish life.

Last week Bishop Lynch was here to confirm 81 men and women in a beautiful ceremony celebrating the Holy Spirit. The packed Church was on fire with the Spirit including the Bishop himself who gave a heartfelt homily of service and holiness. After the Mass the Bishop mentioned to me how touched he was by the preparation of the men and women he confirmed and of course the music was outstanding! I would like to thank Mary Ann Weigel and her staff, Dr. John Paul Cappa, the choir, and musicians, and Sandra Bonilla and her staff in getting some of the adults ready for this day.

Well, that is all for now. Continue to enjoy the gift that God has given in each other!

Peace,

Fr. I can feel the excitement building as more and more of our parish family begin to be involved in the Campaign which only means that we can get closer and closer to our goal as the days go by. We hope to keep you informed of our progress and I pray that more and more of you will embrace this huge goal and make St. Mark that Spiritual Center of New Tampa that we have dreamed about from the beginning of our history.

As you know, some of our youth are hoping to attend NCYC which is a National convention for youth held every two years around the country. This convention is attended by over 25-35 thousand young people and they get together to pray, sing, attend workshops, and gather with other like-minded Catholic young people from across the globe. It truly is quite an event to see thousands of young people worshiping God at Mass and it is an eye opening experience that forever changes their outlook on faith and religion in their lives. If anyone would be able to help financially to make this a reality for some young person, I and they would be forever grateful. Simply contact Mary Ann Weigel in youth ministry for more information.

I haven't picked up a club in over 4 months and already I've forgotten how to swing at that stupid ball with the dimples on it. I think the next time I go out, I'll just make a hefty slash at the ball and see where it goes. It can't get any worse and I might even decide to like the game once again.

Well, that's all for now. Continue to enjoy the gift that God has given us in each other.

Peace,

Fr. Over 200 tickets were sold, although it seemed almost twice that amount that ate the delicious spaghetti and meatballs. I had to "oversee" the cooking of the sauce and meatballs, since I needed to be sure it met the standards that every Italian mother would accept. Thank goodness a real Italian, Nick Piscitelli, was able to make the sauce from scratch with real tomatoes rather than those other nationalities that simply use ketchup! Anyway, the meal was terrific, and I know many others felt the same way as we celebrated a "Taste of Italy" on this most beautiful night! Grazzie to all the Knights responsible for the success of this event, and we can't wait for the Friday Fish Frys that will be coming soon.

Again this week I have been meeting with families to talk about plans for our new Church, and it continues to humble me at how much the families of our parish care about our people and wish to give back in so many ways to God. Although we still have a ways to go in some areas, I can sense our people are as excited as I am at the prospect of a new Church in the near future, and they continue to stretch themselves by sacrificing to make this happen. I have been blessed by being a part of this parish these past 8 years and the love I have for our people here with all their experiences, both good and bad, has truly been an inspiration to me and cemented my decision to become a Priest almost 21 years ago. God is very good, and I hope I can continue to serve you the best I can in His Name.

Well, that is all for now. Continue to enjoy the gift that God has given us in each other.

Peace,
Fr. Since my childhood days, exercise was not one of my most treasured moments and I still, after all these years, try to force myself to get out there. So I'm always looking for excuses, and the cold weather is a good one!

Some of you may or may not have noticed, but the Knights of Columbus put up parking spaces for expectant mothers a few weeks ago which try to promote life. I think it's a wonderful idea, and I thank the Knights for their efforts in obtaining this for our parish, and I hope those expecting will be able to use them.

I have been out of the office a lot lately visiting families who will be able to help us in our effort to build a new Church. I have been amazed at the generosity of our people and many of them are excited at the prospect of this becoming a reality in the near future. Many have even stretched themselves a little financially in trying to make this happen for our parish community, and it goes to show how FAITH is such an important element in this important endeavor. I know God will bless them abundantly! Stay tuned to the bulletin and web-site for further information as we begin the countdown to the parish-wide Capital Campaign in the Spring!

Well, that is all for now. After participating in some of the events, I got a first hand chance to see the Holy Spirit in action, not only in the attendees, but in the team that put on the weekend. There was a glow in all the men, and it goes to show, once we let our guards down, the Holy Spirit will thrive! Congratulations to all the men who attended the retreat, and I can hardly wait to see the growth in holiness that this week's experience started in them. This week, the women of the parish will experience their retreat, so I ask for your prayers for these great ladies as they enter into this divine experience milieu!

Some of you also may have noticed that we have created two new parking spaces (right next to the parking spaces for Clergy) for expectant mothers of the parish. As young a parish as we are, I realize two spaces doesn't quite cut it since we have a good number of expectant mothers, but at least it's a start. Hopefully, the new Church will create more spaces, and the young Church of St. Mark will continue for generations to come! It is one of the ways we, as a Church try to promote life, and we also pray for families in this difficult time to let them know that we care for them.

Speaking of parking spaces, you may have noticed a new car in one of those clergy spaces. Yep, it's mine! One day I made the mistake of checking out the new Honda Fits and stumbled on the Honda Insight Hybrid which supposedly gets great gas mileage and is one of those green innovations for the protection of the environment. I'm having a great time driving it thus far, and it looks like I'm saving lots of gas when I stop and go in this Bruce B. Downs traffic! Monsignor Daly blessed the car for me the other day with his traditional Irish blessing. Then he proceeded to charge me for all his hard work! The Irish always know how to get something out of any act that's good. That's all I'm saying!

Well, that is all for now. Continue to pray for each other!
Peace,
Fr. Possibly the reason was that our experience there was a little problematic. When we arrived at the Port of Alexandria, named after Alexander the Great, we found the city littered with garbage! It really took away from the beauty of this historic city, and it didn't get any better on our two hour bus trip to Cairo to see the Pyramids. The capital city was also littered with garbage and many of the streets were unpaved with donkeys pulling cargo on wagons. I didn't realize that Egypt was considered a "third world" country, and now I know! After arriving in Cairo, we took a lunch tour along part of the Nile which was kind of nice and the hotel we arrived at to stay the night was absolutely breathtaking! It was the hotel where Franklyn Roosevelt and Winston Churchill planned WWII. It also was the hotel where Begin, Carter, and Sadat signed the peace treaty between Israel and Egypt. It was amazing how a place of overwhelming decadence could be situated in such a poor country. Our first night in Cairo was spent watching the light show at the pyramids which at first was impressive until we sat through the narrative of the history of the pyramids and many of us ending up going to sleep. I think they should notify the folks at Disney to update their presentation! The next day after a wonderful evening at the hotel, we visited the pyramids themselves and it was quite an experience, although I wouldn't care if I ever saw another pyramid as long as I live. I'm sure history buffs and UFO followers would find them fascinating, but to me they were a neatly mounted pile of rocks that served no purpose but to be the burial chambers for Kings. Although there were camel rides available, I wasn't in the mood to get spit upon or smell like a Bedouin after I got off one. After the visit to the pyramids, we took the Kamikaze ride home through the desert and ended up back at the ship! I was never so glad to be "home" after that experience. I guess I'm not THAT happy a camper! Anyway, it was back to Italy after the experience in Egypt, and I looked forward to great food once again! Well, that is all for now. May we continue to pray for one another!

Peace,
Fr. Thus, I have asked Chuck Rizzo to move down to the Faith Formation office and work with them on a permanent basis. He will be continuing his duties in communications and scheduling along with his duties in that office. Dick Ray will now be working with Tom Hanrahan on our Capital Campaign and continuing with his Stewardship responsibilities. I thank both men for their willingness to take on these responsibilities, and I pray that 2011 will bring us all an abundance of grace!

Peace,

Fr. Nevertheless, I hope to be back in the rhythm of things and write a little more consistently until the next holiday season approaches!

I hope by now we have gotten through Christmas and New Year unscathed and that we are still on our new year resolution schedule. I have made a few myself but of course I would never tell for fear of being accountable for what I promised, but as of this writing, I'm still on track! No, it doesn't concern my golf swing since that has been a wonderful lesson in hopelessness, but I do wish to improve upon a variety of things. Let's pray for each other in that!

These past few months we have been working hard on preparing for the upcoming Capital Campaign for a new church. A wide variety of dedicated individuals have come forward to work on the campaign and also have already made pledges. Despite the tough economic times, people have been VERY generous and willing to help to make this Church a reality. They see it as giving back to God for all His great blessings on us which really is what Stewardship is all about! So as we move forward, we pray that God will look upon us on this historic venture for our parish and bless us with his grace!

Next week, Christ Renews His Parish will conduct their 7th retreat weekend for men which is always a profound experience! Pray for those who will be attending this retreat and for their families who will sacrifice in allowing them to attend.

Well, that is all for now. Continue to enjoy the gift that God has given in each other.

Peace,

Fr. Among the many is the success you have achieved with the Annual Pastoral Appeal. I am very pleased with the result thus far having achieved nearly 95% of our goal.

Remembering that our 2010 APA goal is $233,611, thus far 713 of our St. Mark family have pledged $220,995. The average gift is $ 310.00. Many of you have seen fit to support the Appeal even during these hard times. This speaks volumes about our St. Mark family and I am proud of you.

We still have a way to go, however, and I am asking those of you that gave last year to do so again this year. Those of you, who have not given, consider the need of the many ministries the Appeal supports. Thirty eight per cent, the largest portion of your donation supports Parish and Diocesan Ministries, family and life support ministries, multicultural ministries, Scouting and LPMI, just to name a few.

Services to Parishes and Schools, Catholic Formation and Education, Clergy, Religious and Seminarian Support and Vocation and Seminary Educations find support from your APA donations.

Please remember that we are committed to paying the $233,611. Any difference between your donations and the assessment will come from our general revenues. Make your donations directly by using the envelopes available in the Narthex or use a debit/credit card and donate online.

Thank you again for your support and it is my sincerest hope that we will meet our APA goal this year. One of my dreams is to have just one donation from you that will be used to support the different expenses we incur. After leaving Turkey, we visited the region of Galilee in which Jesus spent His early years and most of His adult years growing up. Upon visiting this historic place, one can see why Jesus spent much of His time here, especially with His disciples after the resurrection. We began by visiting the Mount of the Beatitudes where Jesus gave His most inspiring teaching to the multitudes that were gathered on the slope of the hill. Behind them was the Sea of Galilee which goes as far as the eye can see and was the scene of many of the parts in the New Testament. It was there where many of our group took their shoes off and waded in those waters where Jesus performed some of His miracles. I couldn't help but picture in my mind those scenes from scripture where Jesus calmed the storm and where He would sit in a boat and teach just beyond the shore to those willing to listen. After we left there we went to a Kibbutz where we had a wonderful "Gospel meal" consisting of fish from the Sea of Galilee along with some Jewish vegetables and bread. I think I even found a coin in one of the fish! We also visited the area in which Jesus visited after the Resurrection and the spot where He gave Peter the Keys to the Kingdom. After we had our meal we went back to the ship, took a nice nap and then prepared for yet another feast for dinner. Next week: Jerusalem!

It also has been a busy week as we have been interviewing candidates for the Director of Stewardship position here at the parish. We had many applications and we currently have begun the interview process. There are some excellent candidates who have applied and we ask for your prayers as we continue the n process. Well, that is all for now. Continue to enjoy the gift that God has given us in each other.
Peace,

Fr. After Greece, we traveled to the country of Turkey and its outstanding beauty! I didn't expect to find that the western part of this country was made up of large mountains and fertile valleys but I was impressed by its peacefulness and beauty. Our first stop was to the ruins of Ephesus where Paul did much of his preaching, and I couldn't get over how progressive and modernistic the people of Ephesus were. The beauty of Ephesus was outstanding with all its marble structures and mosaics even on its sidewalks. We saw where Paul preached in its amphitheater and on some of the rolling hills where I could imagine thousands listening to his every word. We then traveled to a small town way up in the hills where legend has it that Mary, along with the Apostle John, built a small house in which she lived out her remaining days. It's hard to digest what was in front of us as we strode through this modest home and the peace and beauty that surrounded it. We had Mass there just outside her house, and some of us bought religious articles to bring back with us. I simply took in the beauty and tried to imagine Our Lady living here in this peaceful place and upon leaving, I said an "Ave" for you all as we went to the bus down the hill. Next week: Galilee!

Last Sunday we completed our annual St. Mark Golf tournament, and again we all had a marvelous time! God provided us with great weather, and we made some money for our building fund to boot! Of course, I was on the 7th hole again this year as an easy mark for anybody who wanted to "Beat the Priest", and it seemed that the heavy breezes kept many people from fulfilling that quest! I have to say though that my best shot of the day came against my snotty brothers who tried to intimidate me with great shots onto the green. However, I nailed one a few feet away and now I have bragging rights for another year! I thank Chuck and Lois Lewandowski and the golf committee in all their efforts in making this day a great success!

Well that is all for now. Let's enjoy the great weather and keep our Lord close to your heart!

Peace,

Fr. David’s Travels:

Greetings to all of you!

I promised many of you that I would write down some thoughts about the parish Pilgrimage" to Italy, Greece, Turkey, Israel, and Egypt. But rather than bore you with details, I will give you some of the highlights. First of all, we had a wonderful group of people who came on the trip, and we all bonded beautifully and became fast friends by the time it was over. There were some grueling climbs up steep mountains and church steps. I was stunned by the determination of some of our elderly and disabled participants to make sure they made it to the top! Anyway, I'm really glad to be back in the good old U.S of A. What follows are some highlights about what we experienced.

Of course, Italy is always a treasure to behold and experience! My brother, sister-in-law and I spent a lot of time eating pasta and drinking wine. It seems we tried to find Trattorias that served prosciutto, suprasade, olives, cheese, bread, and all the other things we ate growing up. I think we spent more time eating than visiting Rome's sights. However, we all did experience the Vatican Museum, St. Peter's Basilica and a few of the Piazza's of Italy. However, we did have one experience that was so profound when we visited the actual tomb of St. Peter himself. The guide took us underground beneath the Basilica where an excavation took place in the late 1930's and 40's. Although it was said that the Basilica was built over the Tomb of St. Peter, there was never really any evidence of it until now. As the guide took us through what amounted to an ancient cemetery with its road ways and mausoleums, we eventually came across the actual tomb. What was even more startling was that we even got to see the graffiti wall which contained the actual bones of the first Pope himself. It really made my skin tingle with excitement, and I could hardly imagine what I was seeing! If you ever get to Rome, make sure you take in this experience. It will really put you in touch with the early Church! Next week the highlights will include Greece and Turkey.

Also this week we are celebrating Commitment Sunday in which we renew our Commitment to God for the many blessings He has given us. If you didn't bring your commitment form, feel free to pick one up in the narthex of the church and drop it in the collection basket when you are able. May God bless your Stewardship!

I guess that does it for now. Hope you all have a blessed week!

Peace,

Fr. Over 80 ladies and some of their young daughters participated in what we hope could be an annual event. We all heard inspiring messages from God and we were treated to some great tea and sandwiches from Maggie's Closet located on Cross Creek Blvd., and, of course, some wonderful desserts, some of which were made by a young lady from our parish who donated her Time, Talent, and Treasure for the event. We even had "Harry Conick Jr." along with Iris Galing and Dr. John Paul Cappa serenade the crowd with "All I Ask of You" from the "Phantom of the Opera" and a rousing rendition of "That’s What Friends are For", in which the audience participated. My many thanks to the Columbiettes and President Darlene Fritz, along with Chairwoman Nancy Larson and her committee for such an outstanding event. I'm looking forward to the next tea already!

As you read this, 30 people from the parish and I are on a plane heading to Rome to minister to the people along the Mediterranean Sea. I will be gone on a few weekends, so in my absence Fr. Ed will be running the parish, and I hope you will give him your full support as he ministers to your needs. I promise to pray for all of you as I visit the Basilica of St. Peter and view the actual bones of this beloved Apostle. Keep us in your prayers also as we embark on this treacherous journey! Hopefully, I'll have lots to tell when I get back.

Well, that is all for now. Len Plazewski, Vocation Director of the Diocese of St. Petersburg. Fr. Len will be preaching at all the Masses regarding vocations, and I know for a fact there are a number of young men and women who are interested in pursuing this call by God. Even in our young history, there have been three individuals from our parish who are discerning a vocation and are currently in formation in their respective religious houses. However, we do need young men to look into Diocesan Priesthood to serve our local area and young women to look into religious life. I can't think of a time when it is more needed for our community and nation to have people who will serve in this way. So, if you think that someone in your family or circle of friends has the call to Priesthood or Religious life, let me know! Our Vocation Team headed by Monin Gonzalez is doing great work in promoting it, and I'm so grateful for all their work.

No more golf to report on after the hole-in-one, but since the weather is cooling down a bit, I may decide to chase that little white ball around again. Then again, after a shot like that, what else do I have to shoot for?

Well, it looks like one more week to go before many from our parish along with myself will be visiting the Missions of Italy, Greece, Turkey, Israel, and Egypt. I'm sure the people of those countries will be so grateful for our presence as we minister to their needs as only people from St. Mark can do! It will be a huge sacrifice and struggle on our part, but somebody has to venture out from our own safety and preach the word of God. I just hope we can tolerate the many days of being at sea and dining on the grub they usually give you on these big rigs. I have yet to begin to pack! Anyway, pray for us!

Well, that is all for now. Continue to enjoy the gift that God has given us in each other.

Peace,

Fr. Well, last week I decided to drive to Ocala and play some golf with my brothers who live there, and which is becoming a nice routine for us. Well, I got there early and decided to treat them to a round of golf since they are always so generous to me. After playing a few holes, we came to the treacherous par 3 fifth hole, 148 yards long over a huge lake. The wind was brutal, blowing against us, feeling like one of those ocean holes at the British Open! In the lake there was what seemed like hundreds of alligators protecting the green which was surrounded by traps deeper than the baloney you're reading here! (But I digress). Anyway, I pull out my 7 iron at first and my brother Frankie talks me out of it, so I decide to hit the 8. I take a mighty swing ,and the ball rockets toward the green. Meanwhile, I see the alligators jumping up out of the water, chomping at the flying ball, trying to intercept it before it hits the green! At that point the tension was palpable, and I wondered if I was going to get out of there alive. Low and behold an angel from Heaven suddenly swoops down and rescues my golf ball from the monstrous alligators, drops it on the green where a squirrel takes it and drops it in the cup! You guessed it, A HOLE IN ONE!! My brothers jump for joy, and I stood there stunned at the events that just took place! It looked like a scene from a Cecil B. De Mille movie! Anyway, I got back in the clubhouse and bought the whole place a drink, (which consisted of 3 guys at the bar, thank God), and went home on cloud nine. I guess it goes to show what God does for us when we practice Stewardship in our lives. Who knows? Maybe YOU, too, can get a hole in one one day!

Well, that's enough for this week! Enjoy the gift that God has given us in each other!

Peace,

Fr. I can't believe it's September already! In a month or so, the cool weather will finally arrive and I can get back to golfing, biking, and other outdoor activities that I have long neglected due to the heat. Football is in the air which makes me look forward to a Sunday afternoon of yelling at the television screen, eating potato chips and salsa, and, of course, gaining weight to protect me from the winter cold. I'm going to warn you all right now, if anyone complains about how cold it is on a given day, I will remind you how hot it was this past summer, so you won't get any sympathy from me!

This weekend we also will introduce a new event here at St. Mark called, "Tea Time with God", which will take place later on this month. Men and women are invited to purchase tickets for the event, and I hear there will be a personal appearance by God Himself. I sure hope the tea is good! I've also heard that Sarah Brightman and Michael Crawford from “Phantom of the Opera” will also make a special appearance. Tickets will be on sale before and after all the Masses and only 80 will be sold. Make sure you get yours before they run out!
Well, that is all for now. We are continuing to set in place all the specific items we need to accomplish before the Capital Campaign begins in January of 2011. We've had a couple of meetings with the Campaign Cabinet Committee, and we are working closely with Tom Hanrahan from Southeast Advancement Services which is our Fund Raising Consultants, and our architect Alberto Portella. I have also been visiting with potential donors, some who are already part of the campaign strategy, and others that may have the capability to give a large gift. I'm happy to say that we already have over $385,000 cash in our account thus far, and although we have a long way to go to reach $10 million, it certainly is a great start! Continue to pray as we head towards a new chapter in our short history.
Also, this past week some of our young men and women have started school, which is always a hectic time getting back on schedules and all. For the first time, I will be having two of my nieces in Tampa going to college, so it looks like they will be spying on me and reporting back to my brother! However, I'm sure with their schedules, they are going to be extremely busy and won't have the time to spy on Uncle Dave! Let's keep all the school kids in prayer as they start another year and even more for the teachers to be remembered also!

Well, that is all for now. I am pleased to announce that the recipients of the Jude Award Medal for St. Mark the Evangelist Church this year are Nancy and Rich Larson! Nancy and Rich have been outstanding stewards from the very beginning of our parish and we are so blessed to have had this wonderful couple serving us at St. Mark for these many years. Many of you most likely know them or, at least, have seen their faces on many committees and leadership positions, so I know you will agree that they are very deserving of this outstanding award. Now if only we can get Rich to fix that loop in his golf swing, he would be an even more perfect candidate! Anyway, offer them your congratulations and thanks for all they have accomplished here. They will be receiving the award from Bishop Lynch on the Feast of Christ the King in November. Ad Multos Annos to the Larsons!
This year’s Vacation Bible School was once again a HUGE success as children experienced a "road tour" of various ways of life in our country. It was so successful that some moms asked me if we could do it for two weeks next year! I'm not sure if we have the energy to make that happen, but I'm glad to hear that the kids loved it. I would like to thank Sandra Bonilla, Claudia Garcia, and all those volunteers who made this such a successful event. Hopefully, when we get our new Church, we will have much more room to accommodate those children who were not able to attend due to space limitations. I'm looking forward to next year already!
Finally, I did get a chance to play golf with my three brothers this past week at a club called Golden Ocala. What a wonderful course to play in which some of the holes are replicas of holes from Augusta National and St. Andrews, among others. I didn't play real well on the front nine (51), but I regrouped and played the back nine in three over 38! What's really amazing is that the 5 or 6 replica holes on the back nine I played in even par. Go figure! Playing with my brothers is always a treat since nothing is ever left unsaid and one needs a pretty thick skin to endure a round with them! My brother Joe, whom we affectionately call "Bulldozer" doesn't let us get away with anything. When my brother Phil, whom we call the "stargazer" told Joe he had a "9 or 10" on a hole, Bulldozer promptly put down 10 on the score card! No mercy there I guess! All in all, it was a great day (although a hot one, I almost wilted on the 17th) and we may play again somewhere this week. Pray for me!

Well that is all for now. Continue to enjoy the gift that God has given in each other!

Peace,

Fr. What a tremendous display of generosity that St. Mark’s parishioners again showed to a need! Last week, we celebrated “Wheelchair Sunday”, in which a presentation was made on behalf of the Knights of Columbus for wheelchairs to veterans and the needy throughout the world. Christopher Lewis, son of the famous Jerry Lewis, was here to make the appeal and you came through in grand style! Over $20,000 was collected, and this will go a long way in providing wheelchairs to those who cannot afford one. Despite difficult economic times, your stewardship knows no bounds! Thanks to the Knights of Columbus for introducing this to our parish, and I thank all of you once again for coming through when the need is so evident! I know God will bless us all!
I finally did get on the golf course last week, and despite playing through the summer heat, my game was the best I've played in a few years. I played with two young bucks who hit the ball amazingly long, but in the end it was accuracy and experience that won the day! I'm not sure what transpired, but the ball seemed to go straight for once, and my putts were finding the hole. Maybe I should take three months off more often since I play so well when I lay off for awhile. Anyway, I did teach those young bucks a lesson, and I'm sure they're going to be after me from now on. I say, "bring it on!"
This coming weekend, the Men's Christ Renews His Parish (CRHP) will be conducting their retreat, and we pray for all the men who will be attending this life changing event. Keep them in your thoughts as they continue their journey to a closer relationship with the God who is so good to us!
Well, that is all for now. Continue to enjoy the gift that God has given us in each other!

Peace,

Fr. Due to your generous giving I am happy to report that we are well ahead of last year’s June 2009 totals.
Remembering that our 2010 APA goal is $233,611, thus far we have reached 68.79% of our goal with $160,693 pledged. The average gift is $275.63 above last year while the participation level of 26% is about the same. Many of you have seen fit to support the Appeal even during these hard times. This speaks volumes about our St. Mark family and I am proud of you.
We still have a way to go, however, and I am asking those of you that gave last year to again do so this year. Those of you who have not given, consider the need of the many ministries the Appeal supports. Thirty eight per cent, the largest portion of your donation, supports Parish and Diocesan Ministries, family and life support ministries, multicultural ministries, Scouting and LPMI, just to name a few.
This means that there is less money available to provide services to you and your children. Imagine if the remaining 74% of you gave, we would be well over our goal and not have to take anything from the offertory! Make your donations directly by using the envelopes available in the Narthex or use a debit/credit card and donate online.
Thank you again for your support and it is my sincerest hope that we will meet our APA goal this year. Remember that one of my dreams is to have just one donation from you that will be used to support the different expenses we incur. I pray that this dream will be fulfilled.

Peace,

Fr. It's always exciting to see a young person finish one part of their life while moving on in a whole new direction. This year one of my favorite nieces will be graduating high school and it really wouldn't be that special except for the fact that she is the dreaded "middle child" and has had to endure the great achievements of her sisters and brother before and after her. However, in the last few years she has blossomed into one of the best volleyball players in the state and, even better, she has developed into a sweet, sincere, and loving young woman. So I guess I can be excused a little for bragging about her accomplishments despite her difficult journey in still a very young life. It will be interesting to see what college brings and just maybe she will be one of those superstars and take care of her old Uncle David in his old age. So, congratulations to all our St. Mark graduates and please know that like Jesus, we will always be here to love and support you in whatever journey your life leads you!
Now that it's getting hot, I've been reluctant to take out the racing bike and journey around Flatwoods Park. However, I need to be a little less of a wimp and get myself back out there despite the blazing debilitating sun! Thanks to all of you that sent me little tricks you use to deal with the heat. I'll have to try them and see what happens! I also need to get back hitting some golf balls since my brothers are getting lessons and gunning for me the next time we play together. I think I'm in big trouble on all fronts!
Well, that is all for now. Continue to enjoy the gift that God has given us in each other.

Peace,

Fr. Over 500 people came, and although it was a little warm, we were delighted by all the food, soft drinks, games, etc. that made this event one of our highlights of the year. There are so many groups to thank, but I would like to especially thank the Knights of Columbus for all their work in setting up and cooking all that food and Julio Dones and the Stewardship Commission for all their work in making this happen. Good job everyone, and I hope next year God gives us a nice cool day!

Last Sunday, 97 young men and women received Confirmation here at St. Mark with Abbot Isaac presiding. The church was packed with relatives and friends from far and wide gathering for this beautiful ceremony. It is always a great feeling to see these young people complete their full initiation into the Catholic Church as they go out into the world and live this Gospel of Love!

We are currently underway in the “soft” phase of our Capital Campaign for a new Church building and thus far those who have been asked to help financially and with their talents are doing it with enthusiasm! If things go well during this phase, we hope to kick off the campaign in January of 2011. What an exciting time for us here at St. Mark! I ask for your prayers and support when the time comes. We are growing so fast and our area needs a prominent spiritual home, especially during these difficult economic times. Let’s make this happen for our families!

Now that it is getting hotter outside, I’m trying to find creative ways to ride my bike and still remain cool. If anyone has any advice, feel free to let me know since I usually wimp out when it gets too hot!

Well, that is all for now. Continue to enjoy the gift that God has given us in each other.

Peace,

Fr. I’m sure Our Lady smiles at us from Heaven as we use this month to remember her in many special ways as the Great Mother of our Dear Lord. Her constant “yes” to God truly made all of this happen for our benefit. May she continue to be honored as our own Mother and have a special place in our hearts!

Last week we had our Cabinet Meeting for those who came forward to help us organize our desire for a new Church. It seems like things are moving well thus far, and it promises to be an exciting year when we kick off the Capital Campaign in January of 2011. The new Church designs look outstanding, but more importantly, we are in the early stages of making St. Mark The Evangelist parish one that will touch the hearts and souls of many in the New Tampa community who are seeking hope and stability in a world that offers neither. I hope and pray that a new Church will not only bring people to Christ but it will unite us as brothers and sisters in Christ and be effective instruments of God’s love. Keep up the praying and, by-the-way, if anyone hits the lottery, please contact me immediately!

A few weeks ago I bought a new racing bike after riding a road bike that was over 12 years old and badly needing a major tune up. It seemed every time I took that road bike out on Flatwoods Park, I could barely make it around the loop without falling into a heap of exhaustion. Now with this new racing bike, I’ve been going twice around the loop and passing people who used to blow right by me snickering as they saw this poor pathetic creature peddling so hard. I even bought a helmet and now I look like one of those professional racers! Unfortunately, with speed sometimes mishaps come with it. I did crash into a bridge banister a couple of weeks ago and scraped my arm and bruised the side of my body. I was fine but my ego took a huge beating! Now I can say with all sincerity that I am indeed one of them (those racers) as I now have my own “badge of honor” to prove it! Pray for me!

Well, that is all for now.

Over 76,000 students from across the United States participated in the test and these three members earned scores in the top 20% of the entire nation. They are John Riccardi, Scott Fleming and Dion Larson! The Department of the U.S. Treasury will then select 20 students from this 20% and will award each student $1000. In addition, Dion Larson achieved a perfect score of 100% on this National exam and is one of only 500 people to do so! Congratulations to Scott, John, and Dion, we are so proud of you!!

Last Saturday we had our annual Ministerial Leadership Informational Meeting in which we discussed the workings of the Pastoral Council and the various goals and objectives we have laid out for the next 5-10 years. Leaders from most of the ministries in our parish came together to hear some exciting news as we head into the future of our parish, and they were told of their importance in making much of this happen. We were also shown the latest plans for our new Church, which was truly a high point! I was very impressed by their enthusiasm and determination in the planning process of St. Mark, and we look forward to even better things as Jesus once promised us!

Well, that is all for now. Last Saturday, I was able to attend part of the Confirmation retreat with our youth at the Bethany Center. The retreat center is such a great place to get away from the world and all its stresses and be quiet for just a little while. We are so fortunate to have a place like this very near to us in Lutz. Anyway, while there I got the chance to hear confessions, have dinner, and then Mass with our young men and women. Every time I attend an event such as this, I am always amazed at the outstanding youth we have here at St. Mark. They are deeply spiritual and actually care about their world and the faith in which they have been brought up. Their families have done an excellent job in raising such wonderful young men and women!

It has been awhile since you heard from me regarding our Annual Pastoral Appeal (APA) and I wish to take this opportunity to update you on our progress thus far and express the importance of reaching our goal of $233,611. Appeal contributions support a variety of causes in our diocese that one parish alone would not be able to handle, such as, Parish and Diocesan ministries, temporal affairs, service to parishes and schools, Catholic Formation and Education of adults, seminarian support, and Social Services/Catholic Charities. So far nearly 500 families have pledged over $134,000 towards our goal and we are almost half way finished for the year. Please, if you haven’t given to the Appeal, I pray that you will because not only does it support so many different areas, but it also helps St. Mark in the process. For every dollar that you contribute is one LESS dollar we have to take from operating funds to meet our assessment. In a couple of weeks I am inviting Shelia Lopez, CEO of Catholic Charities to speak to us about where your sacrifices go to support the ministry of the Gospel. Pledge envelopes are in the Narthex and if you have already contributed, I thank you with a sincere heart!

We continue to work on our plans for a Capital Campaign in January of 2011 when we will begin raising money for our much needed Church. More news will be forthcoming!
I did get on the golf course last Friday for one of those miracle moments when things actually were going well. I lost only one ball and scored in the middle 80’s for the first time in awhile. Maybe this might be a good year after all.

Also, only two cabins remain for our Trip to the Holy Land in October. They tell me this week is the last week to book since the ship is full. Give me a call if you wish more information or wish to go. Well, that is all for now. Continue to enjoy the gift that God has given us in each other.

Peace,

Fr. We priests also struggle with being good Christian people and we experience disappointment and frustration at the way things are and feel helpless to make it better. However, the people here at St. Mark have shown me time and again the power of faith in overcoming great obstacles by your thoughtfulness and desire to make things happen. Rarely, have I seen such a great effort by so many, and for that I am so thankful to be your Pastor. I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else and I look forward to even greater things in our future! Be assured of my prayers for all of you during this Holy time.

This Monday, I will have participated in a fundraiser to benefit the golf team at the University of South Florida which is my Alma Mater. I’m a little nervous since I haven’t been out in awhile and I have been partnered with Vinnie Testaverde, the former quarterback for the Bucs! I’m not sure what kind of game I’ll bring to the course, but I just am thrilled to play with a nice person such as he. I just hope I can keep control of my language as I hack it around. I’ll let you know how I do in the next column.

As of this writing, we still have a few cabins left for our trip to Europe and the Holy Land in October. If you haven’t made your mind up just yet, I would recommend you do it soon before the cabins are gone. You can reach Binnie at Tampa Palms Travel at 813-514-1507. This is a once in a lifetime trip and I promise it will be one that you will remember always. In addition, what a great opportunity to walk the land of Jesus with your parish family!

Well, that is all for now. John Murray as our retreat Master. What a great gift to give yourself and your loved ones by taking advantage of this opportunity for spiritual growth. I’m looking forward to listening to his presentation. Please remember we will also will have our Parish Penance Service on Tuesday night, March 23rd, within the retreat itself. Just imagine how ready you will be for that great Easter Sacrament where we celebrate with great wonder the resurrection of Jesus Christ! I hope you will come!
No golf to report on again this week since the rains wiped away any chance to play. However, at least my grass and what flowers that were left after the freezes are beginning to come back to life. Hmm, maybe there might be a homily in there somewhere!

I have been meeting with the Pastoral Council these last few months in which we are putting together some goals and objectives for the future of St. Mark Parish. We will be having a Ministry Workshop on April 24th, in which all heads of the parish ministries will be invited to attend an informational meeting to discuss these issues. A letter will be coming from me to all ministry heads with all the details. I am so proud of what our Pastoral Council has accomplished these past years and it is looking like St. Mark will continue to be one of the premier parishes in the Diocese as we head into the future.

Well, that is all for now. Don’t get me wrong, I hate the cold just about as much as anybody, but for me it sure beats 90 degree weather during the summer! I guess it’s one of those Lent things where I’m trying to be more content with the happenings of my life. I just wish it would carry over to my golf game!

Next week we will have Fr. John Murray here to give a parish mission as we prepare for Holy Week coming the week after. Just a side note: Fr. Murray is the brother of our Youth Minister Mary Ann Weigel! So if you know Mary Ann, you will agree that this is going to be one heck of a retreat!

The Knights keep breaking all kinds of records for their Fish Frys during Lent. Last week they sold over 553 dinners not to mention all the free dinners they fed me! Anyway, keep it coming guys!
Coming in the latter part of April, our Pastoral Council will be holding a workshop for all the leaders of our parish ministries. In it we will explain the purpose of the Council in addition to some goals and objectives we feel we need to accomplish in the coming years. I hope all the leaders will be able to come to it! More information will be forthcoming. I’m so proud of all our ministries as we all take ownership of our great parish!
Well, that is all for now. Last Saturday a group of parishioners and I attended a dinner for the benefit of Catholic Education. Timothy Dolan, the Archbishop from New York gave an uplifting presentation on the importance of Catholic Education and the great leaders it has produced. I also found out that he is a NY Yankee fan, (well he should be), which surprised me since he was from St. Louis. Anyway, I was thrilled that so many of our own were there to represent St. Mark and there were over 540 people in attendance. Bishop Lynch was also there despite his illness and he is looking better and better as the days and months go on.

The following Sunday, our Catechumens and Candidates traveled to St. Jude Cathedral for the Rite of Election and were welcomed by Bishop Lynch in a packed Cathedral. This year there were over 1,060 Catechumens and Candidates from around the Diocese who are looking to enter full communion with the Catholic Church at the Easter Vigil. I was proud to see a good number of participants from our own St. Mark who will be coming into the Church this year. I’m sure they were overjoyed meeting the Bishop for the first time. Continue to pray for them as they take the additional steps in the coming months.

As the days get a little warmer, I’m hoping to get out to the Links real soon. My oldest brother, Joe, has been trash talking with me for a month now thinking he can outscore me due to the golf lessons he has been taking. However, one can never overlook the power of intimidation and persuasion when it comes to this crazy game. My poor brother continues to get intimidated by my twin brother and me whenever we play. Hopefully, I can let you know how the game turned out when we play next time.

Well, that is all for now. I hope your Lent is going well thus far and I pray that you will continue to enjoy the gift that God has given us in each other.

Peace,

Fr. I say it’s important in that we have been given the responsibility by Christ to go and comfort the poor, the broken hearted, and make disciples of all people. The APA does that and more for the people of the Diocese of St. Petersburg and our parish of St. Mark has always been generous! I thank you for last year’s record giving to this appeal in the amount of $180,000 and I ask and pray that you will be as generous with this year’s appeal. God will bless your generosity!

Also coming up during Lent is the gathering of Small Christian Communities in which the Scriptures are read and life experiences are spoken about. It truly is an enriching experience, and I promise it will deepen this great mystery of Christ’s death and resurrection. Sign up is available after all the Masses, and time is limited so I hope you will be able to take advantage of this opportunity.

As some of you may know, in October we will be cruising the Mediterranean once again, but this time making stops in Israel, walking in the footsteps of Jesus and continuing on to the great city of Alexandria, with additional stops in Greece and Turkey. If you’re interested in going, information is available on our website or you can call the office for details. We have only 20 cabins reserved and they’re going fast so sign up soon before they’re sold out.
Well, that is all for now. Continue to enjoy the gift that God has giving us in each other.

Peace,

Fr. We began collecting here at the Church last week and we will continue to do so this week. So if you want to be sure your offerings go to the right place, we will make that happen. All the Diocesan collections for Haiti go through the Catholic Relief Services (CRS) program established by the Catholic Church to support the poor and suffering. Thank you to all who have contributed to this fund and we continue to pray for the people of Haiti.

Last week, men from our parish experienced another Christ Renews His Parish (CRHP), and again lives are being changed! I heard some powerful presentations, and many were moved by the experience. I’m so proud of Team 4 for putting together another great retreat, and I pray for the men of CRHP 5 as they continue their journey in deepening their relationship to Christ! The Women’s CRHP is next and it, too, promises more miracles!

I visited last Thursday with the people of the RCIA who are taking steps to learn more of the Catholic Church, and hopefully, become full-fledged Catholics at the Easter Vigil. I was touched at their attentiveness and their desire to learn more about our faith! Their questions were very thought provoking, and I’m thrilled that they are looking forward to coming into our parish family. We are honored to have them with us!
Lastly, since the Giants are out of the playoffs, I’m rooting for the Jets to go all the way! It’s going to be hard fought, the guys in Green will prevail, God willing!

Well, that is all for now. Again, this year we had another wonderful Christmas at St. Mark. I appreciate all those who made this wondrous event so memorable. There are so many people behind the scenes that make it all happen, and I am so thankful for all their support and hard work. What a great way to end the year!

As we look forward to 2010, I pray that we will have an even greater year as we move forward here at St. Mark. We are currently laying down plans to raise funds for a new church beginning with a Capital Campaign in January of 2011, which I am looking forward to getting started. Our Pastoral Council is involved in some strategic planning that will tweak the way we do things here in a variety of ways. My hope and prayer for 2010 is that our parish family will continue to deepen their relationship with God through our embracement of the Stewardship way of life. Keep an eye out for some wonderful adult and child educational opportunities and, of course, spiritual retreats and programs. All in all, it looks like another life-giving year at St. Mark, and I hope you take advantage of some or all of them.

In October of this year, we are looking to do another Parish Cruise around the Mediterranean beginning in Rome and making stops in Jerusalem, Alexandria Egypt, Ephesus, Athens, and more. Keep tuned to the parish bulletin and our web-site for further information. It promises to be another great adventure!
Well, that is all for now. The Tampa Bay Children’s Chorus put on an outstanding show last Saturday night. I always love hearing children’s voices especially during the Advent and Christmas Season. We also celebrated our annual Parish Christmas Dinner at Hunters Green C.C., and it also turned out to be a wonderful evening. We had the Barbershop Quartet perform for our listening pleasure, and also had a special appearance by Frankie Sinatra! I would like to thank Denize Soobit, Nancy Larson, and Phyllis Timp for putting this all together. It was a fun evening!

Also on Saturday, we had “Breakfast with Santa”, put on by our Youth Ministry. Hundreds of kids strolled through and made their very own Christmas crafts, heard stories from Mrs. Santa, and also got the chance to meet Santa himself! By the time I got there, it seemed Santa was worn out because when I told him what I wanted for Christmas, he threw me from his Santa Chair and the elves escorted me out! It looks like I’m getting coal again for Christmas! Afterwards, we had a great breakfast made by the Knights of Columbus, and the morning was complete. I would like to thank Maryann Weigel and her angels for all their hard work. It was another success!
Well, I need to get my shopping done. Hope all is well with you, and may the rest of Advent be one of joy and peace for you and your family.
Peace,

Fr. It seems when these dark and dreary days come, one just wishes to be fed and then curl up on the couch with a great book under a warm blanket. I’m sure my body was more than glad not to have gone out braving the elements and winding up with a terrible cold afterwards. I think God gives us days like these to slow down and really enjoy those simple things that make us content. After all, isn’t that what Advent is all about? Now, “where’s my book and warm blanket?”

This past Wednesday I traveled to the Bethany Center which is our Diocesan Retreat House to attend the ordination to the Priesthood of Fr. John Lipscomb. Some of you may have remembered Fr. Lipscomb as Bishop John Lipscomb of the Episcopal Diocese of Southwest Florida. Fr. Lipscomb retired from his Diocese to become a Roman Catholic a few years ago and now he is one of ours. Fr. Lipscomb will be the Spiritual Director at the Bethany Center and he will conduct retreats and give spiritual direction to groups and individuals who go there. The Ordination was beautiful and we were privileged to have Archbishop John C. Favalora there as the ordaining bishop and we found out that Fr. Lipscomb is the 100th priest ordained for our Diocese since it was established in 1968. Congratulations Fr. Lipscomb!
Just a reminder that we will be celebrating a night of “Lessons and Carols” on Saturday, Dec. 19th . This is an ancient and beautiful rite that you won’t want to miss. Get your tickets early and save a few dollars from the price at the door. It promises to be a special night as we await the coming of Christ at Christmas!
Well, that is all for now. Continue to enjoy the gift that God has given us in each other.
Peace,

Fr. His wife, Fern, and his family accepted the award from Bishop Robert Lynch at a service that was memorable for its beauty and simplicity. Seventy-six other people from the various parishes in the Diocese also received the award for their invaluable service to the Church. The Cathedral was filled to capacity with family, friends, and award winners. I was so proud to be there and participate at this annual event; it gave me the chance to say, “Thank You”, to Rob and all those who give of themselves so unselfishly. We do have many “saints” among us building up the kingdom of God, and for that we should always be grateful.

I also got the chance to attend the Annual Corpus Christi School Fall Gala and met many of our parish family who have children attending that school. The great food was catered by Circles and they put on a tremendous display of items for auction to raise money for the school. This year they had a “dessert table” filled with wonderful cakes, cookies, and pies that really caught my attention. Right in the middle of it all was this HUGE chocolate cake that was the most beautiful I had ever seen so I had to bid on it, of course. However, there was a woman who guarded her bid with an eagle eye and wouldn’t let anybody near the bid sheet. I looked at her and yelled, “Young lady, put that pencil down and step away from the table!” I guess having my collar on and my authoritarian voice did the trick because she did move away horrified and never went near the table again. It looks like no one else did either because I eventually won the cake! We had it for Thanksgiving and it was absolutely delicious although one piece was enough for a week’s worth of calories. Oh well, I hope the school at least made some money.
That is all for now. Let us continue to enjoy the gift of each other during this Advent Season!
Peace,

Fr. This is truly a first step to creating an atmosphere of gratitude here at St. Mark and I know for a fact this will change the way you look at the world and what it has to offer. Take a step in faith…..embrace the joy that we were all meant to have in this life of Christian belief. If you haven’t sent in your intent form, we have a box in the Narthex, or you can drop it in the collection basket. May God bless your desire to deepen your relationship with Him who wishes us every good thing.

I have been getting some calls and emails regarding the H1N1 flu virus and our response to it here at St. Mark. I realize that many people are concerned about the chance of transmitting the virus to each other through shaking, holding hands, or drinking from the cup. I have decided here at St. Mark that we will continue our practices as part of our normal liturgical life. However, as adults, we all have the option of NOT doing the above mentioned practices so please don’t be offended if someone does not wish to shake, hold your hand, or drink from the common cup. A simple nod, etc. is sufficient and will not offend. When it comes to Holy Communion, our Eucharistic Ministers have been instructed to use the antiseptic spray provided in the sanctuary before giving out communion. I hope that this decision is acceptable to everyone as we try to get through this flu season.

Well, that is all for now. It was nice to reacquaint myself with old faces and I think everyone had a wonderful time! This year I hit the ball the best I ever had during the, “Beat the Priest”, contest. It seemed whatever way I swung the club, the ball magically landed on the green in most cases. Could it have been angels?? Maybe so, except for a few times during the contest when they may have been asleep or attending to other needs. There was one occasion when my golf instructor came to the hole and after a few lessons last year, I felt the need to show him what a great job he did on me. As I took the club in my hand ready to show off my golfing prowess, I made a mighty swing, (this is the part where the angels must have been busy), in which I took enough turf to cover the entire lake beside the green! The ball went a few yards and with that my ego deflated to an all time low. Red-faced, I fell to the ground feigning injury and it seemed to have worked because they wanted me to take another swing. I told them I had to rest and recover and my instructor let me know that he may have to give me some free lessons later on this month while he’s here so I could avoid injury in the future. Wow, free lessons! Maybe it was beneficial that the angels were sleeping after all! Anyway, I wish to thank Chuck Lewindowski for all his work chairing the event and his committee for another outstanding job! I’d like to thank Hunter’s Green and the guys in the Pro Shop for being so gracious and helpful to us, and for all the Sponsors and golfers who sacrificed, especially in this awful economy, to help us move forward in building this new Church. Please thank them and support their businesses when you can. Also, I’d like to thank former Lightening Captain, David Andreychuk, for allowing us to honor him for all his efforts for Tampa Bay and St. Mark Church. Now I need to rest my weary bones and prepare again for next year.
Again this week I had the opportunity of blessing another business that was just taken over by parishioner Francis Sadiq and his family. Diamond Nail Salon next to Circles Bistro, (another of our parishioners), opened under new management this past week in the Pebble Creek Collection Shopping Center. Let us support our very own and tell them Fr. David sent you!
Well, that is all for now. Continue to enjoy the gift that God has given in each other.

Peace,

Fr. Now I don’t have an excuse except the fact that my game isn’t what it used to be. However, I do need to get out there real soon and practice up for the Annual St. Mark Golf Tournament at Hunter’s Green on November 1st. This year I will be on the 7th hole for the “Beat the Priest” competition in which I try to get the ball closer to the pin than all my opponents. Unfortunately, it seems all that one has to do to win is hit the ball on the green since I’m never there anyway. However, I do remind the golfers of that LARGE lake of water to the right and those finicky “out of bounds” stakes on the left. After all, I think they need to be warned of the impending danger! So if you haven’t gotten your foursome yet, or you just want to play, we can hook you up with some great guys and gals. Come out and say you “beat” Father David and have bragging rights for the year!
Last Saturday night we enjoyed great weather as we celebrated Oktoberfest again this year! The food was great and the entertainment had us dancing and singing. Thanks to the Knights of Columbus for putting on this fun fest every year, and for the great job they did! I hope you all enjoyed it as much as I did.
In the next few weeks you will be hearing more about St. Mark’s commitment to a Stewardship way of life. In November, we will finally help you to embrace this attitude of gratefulness to God by showing you the many ways to accomplish it. Again, Stewardship is a journey of faith and trust; I don’t think there is any better way of “falling in love with God” than this one. I pray that you will embrace it as I did many years ago! This weekend is the Stewardship Extravaganza which will highlight all the great things the parish does to further the message of Christ. I hope that you will take a few minutes to walk through it and meet some great people!
Well, that is all for now. Continue to enjoy the gift that God has given in each other!

Peace,

Fr. It is the first time in our short history that men from our parish were ordained to the Diaconate, and I can't think of two more qualified and holy men who are more deserving of this honor. They will be assisting me in a variety of liturgical and ministerial endeavors such as Marriages, Baptisms, Communion Services, educational opportunities to the parish, along with visitations to the sick, etc. I am definitely thrilled to have these men share in the ministry of our parish, and I know they will add a great deal to our parish life. Make sure you offer congratulations and prayers for them as they begin the wonderful world of ministry!
Last week the Priests of the Diocese came together for our annual convocation and we heard lectures from FatherTimothy Radcliffe, O.P., who will also be here in February of next year to close the three year Eucharistic Conference instituted back in 2007. His latest book, WHY GO TO CHURCH, is an excellent book which I would highly recommend for those of you who would like to learn some wonderful insights on the Mass. Make sure you use our web site and go through Amazon.com to find it.
I played in a charity event entitled, "Tee it up for the Troops", at McDill AFB last Friday. Despite the hot weather, we managed to finish along with a large group of other golfers participating in the event. Despite my best efforts, our team finished in the middle of the bunch due to my other team members. Razor Richie who hit razor like 80 yard drives which didn't help much with distance; while Touchy Terry had the finesse of an elephant in a glass factory; and Ma Na Ja Marty, who yelled this Italian term after all his shots. The meaning of which depends upon the stress one puts on the word, but mostly negative. As you can see I had a tough and grueling day playing under these conditions, but I made us respectable nonetheless. It also provided funds for "Fisher House", which is a place where families of injured soldiers can stay as their loved ones recover. All in all, it was a great opportunity to support our military.
Lastly, on occasion I am asked to bless a business for a particular parishioner and this week I blessed the new Careme’s Market located on Florida Avenue in Lutz. It is a delightful delicatessen/market with fine dining quality foods at a great price. It reminds me of the old Italian shopping markets up north where one can purchase all kinds of meats, cheeses, and sandwiches. There website is caremesmarket.com and phone number is 813-443-5753. Let them know Fr. David sent you.
Well, that is all for now. Continue to enjoy the gift that God has given us in each other.

Peace,

Fr. As many of you know, Corporal Michael Roberts was the police officer who was killed in the line of duty and he was a member of St. Mark Parish. Some of you may remember him directing traffic at our Sunday Masses a few years ago. He was a kind, considerate, and helpful person who always had a smile and would “sneak” into Mass after his shift was over. Last Tuesday, we celebrated his funeral. Although it was a sad occasion, the support of his fellow officers and the outpouring of love for his wife Cindy were simply amazing. There were rows and rows of police officers as far as the eyes can see and I felt so privileged to celebrate his funeral. I hope that the beautiful Catholic funeral liturgy gave them a sense of peace knowing that he still lives and they will see him again! Please pray for his wife and son Adam in this difficult time.

Sometime this week or next, each parish family will be receiving our very first Stewardship Newsletter entitled, “The Good Steward”. I must say what an outstanding job the people of the Stewardship Commission did to make this edition such a success! In it you will see articles of real life individuals in our parish who practice the giving of their Time, Talent, and Treasure to God. We will also have a section reporting how we spend the money that you so generously give to our parish so we can practice good Stewardship of our resources. So take the time to read this simple edition and let me know what you think of it. You will be hearing more news in the near future.
Well, that is all for now. Continue to enjoy the gift that God has given us in each other!

Peace,

Fr. My favorite was Caesar Augustus, who, according to family legend, may have been a distant relative of mine, and was the Emperor of Rome at that time. Since then our family history seems to have taken quite a beating. Instead of Emperors and Popes, we now have insurance salesmen, barkeepers, carpenters, pizza makers, and priests. We must have lost the dowry along the way somewhere. Anyway, I had a wonderful time with the children and I hope they learned something about our first century ancestors. So, if in your travels you see one of the kids still wearing a toga, just remember where they got the idea. We may have started a new fashion trend!

I have been humbled lately by the wonderful generosity of our parish community, as some of our members have come forward to donate some money to families in our parish who are in need. One family came forward and donated $1000 for those St. Mark families who will need school supplies for their children as they go back to school in a few weeks. So if any of you need any help with school supplies, please don’t hesitate to contact Joe Phillips at the parish office.
Well, that is all for now. As you read this I will have just come back from vacation bright eyed and busy tailed! Well at least I hope!
Peace,

Fr. I have to say what a wonderful group of ladies we had participate in it! They were fun, outgoing, creative, and many experienced a deep conversion in their lives due to this important time. I had lots of fun with them and being the only male in the room surrounded by a roomful of beautiful women only added to my joyful mood. I’m really thrilled that this ministry is taking off in our parish and, again, I would like to thank all those who continually make it possible for its success. Maybe Jesus truly will renew our parish to perform even greater things!

On another note, I am looking for a group of individuals who are interested in forming a committee to take care of our flowers here on campus. New plantings are in the works and if you are willing to help take care of God’s beautiful creation, call Kelly in the Parish office and let’s get started in making the grounds of St. Mark a wonderful tribute to our God! The yoke will be easy and the burden light! May God bless your stewardship!
Next week I will be on vacation for a week so you won’t see me at the Masses. Tom Watson has invited me to Kansas to work on his putting game, so my time will be occupied with many of those things related to the golf stroke. Anyway, see you the following week!
That is all for now, continue to enjoy the gift that God has given us in each other.

Fr. This award goes to an individual who has been instrumental in making our parish a vibrant one. They usually work behind the scenes with no fanfare or benefits but to serve God and His people. Thus it is with deep love, respect, and honor that I posthumously present to you the winner of the St. Jude Award Medal: Mr. Rob Rabil. As many of you know, Rob passed away earlier this year after a long battle with cancer. Even during his illness, he never stopped working behind the scenes due to his great love for St. Mark parish. Accepting the Award on November 22, 2009 will be his wife Fern and their three children, Madeline, Michael, and Eric. This is truly a great honor for the family and for St. Mark. I ask your prayers for them in their time of need and may our good friend rest in the arms of God.
By now many of you (who care) have seen the final round of “The Open” and saw the dramatic final few holes. My heart goes out to Tom Watson for playing so well all week only to miss that short putt on the 18th and eventually lose. To get that far at 59 years old was truly amazing! It goes to show that we “older” guys can still play this game if we put our mind to it. However, my nerves aren’t as solid as they once were; I usually fold by the 3rd hole. I can only imagine what he felt looking over that ball and trying to make a good stroke. However, it was not to be and Stewart Cink snuck in there to take the trophy. The only redeeming thing about the experience was what Paul Azinger said when Cink won. He said that Tom Watson winning another Open championship won’t change his life. However, it will for Stewart Cink! Pretty good call all around. Maybe I should go into sports writing as a side hobby!
Well, that is all for now. Continue to enjoy the gift that God has given us in each other.
Peace,
Fr. The men’s and ladies’ Christ Renews His Parish, CRHP), will soon be underway with the men meeting as you read this, and the women meeting in two weeks. In the middle of all this is Vacation Bible School, in which the theme of “Early Rome” will be highlighted. This year we are having a super special person play the part of the powerful Caesar Augustus with toga, crown, and all that goes with being the emperor. The handsome young man playing the part is a huge secret, but I did hear he has Roman blood already flowing in his veins and due to his muscular physique, intelligence, and downright holiness, he will play an excellent role of emperor. Anyway, we may take some pictures. Stay tuned!

I don’t know about you but I have to say “ENOUGH ALREADY” with all the inside stories of the life of Michael Jackson. Like many of you, I grew up with his music and continue to believe that he was the best there was in pop music and we should just let him rest finally in peace. It just goes to show that all the money and talent in the world can never fill that void each human being has in their hearts that only God can fill. I hope we can remember how right St. Augustine was when he said that., “our hearts are restless until they rest in Thee.” Thus in the words of Earnest Hooper, writer for the St. Petersburg Times, “That’s all I’m saying”.

Well, indeed, that is all for now. Continue to enjoy the gift that God has given us in each other.

Peace,
Father David

US Open, CHRP

Greetings to all of you!

Last week I was glued to the TV set watching the U.S. Open in Long Island, N.Y. And, thankfully, between the postponements due to rain and darkness, I was able to get some work done. I think every golfer grows up dreaming about playing in the Open. I remember in my younger and free-swinging days, I was no exception. Now, I enjoy watching the young unknowns creeping up the leader board and maybe, for just a few brief moments, the world sees his name with the likes of Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson! What a tremendous thrill that would be and they would be heroes in their small cities. Unfortunately, they begin to fade away like one of my errant drives, never to be heard from again. And yet, that is the thrill of the U.S. Open, where anybody can win as long as they have the stamina and nerves like steel. I think I would have folded after the first drive on the first hole so I give them lots of credit. As of this writing, I don’t know who the winner is, but I’m sure the thrill he feels right now cannot be put into words.

In just a couple of weeks Christ Renews His Parish (CRHP) will be offering to the men of the parish an opportunity to experience a great weekend of spiritual renewal. These weekends are always wonderful times to strengthen our faith and showing how God actually works in our daily experience. If you haven’t signed up, I would highly recommend that you do! The women of our parish are also on fire and they will be meeting up later on in the month so I would check the bulletin and website for details. Help yourself to a profound experience!

Summers are a time for lots of planning for the future and we certainly have had our share of meetings lately. I am truly excited at what we have prepared in the coming year and beyond. More details will be forthcoming as the time gets closer.

Well, that is all for now. We were able to see the wonderful renovations done by the community for this special event. The Abby church was brightened up and polished. It looks fantastic! Abbot Isaac spoke of the great history of the Benedictine order in this community and singled out various people, (some from St. Mark), who contributed to make this event happen. It was great seeing Abbot Isaac in his role as Abbot of the monastery and his special relationship with our own St. Mark community. Congratulations Abbot Isaac!

By now you may have noticed the elegant curbing surrounding our gardens! This was made possible by the donation of Alberto and Ainoa Solorzano, who have also done the plantings of trees and flowers just outside the Blessed Sacrament Chapel. What a wonderful expression of Stewardship this great couple has expressed here at St. Mark and we are all the better for it! May God continue to bless their goodness! This weekend, we celebrate Fathers’ Day and we remember all fathers living and deceased for their presence in our lives. We will be praying for them throughout the month of June and I hope you all make “dad’s day” a special one!

Last week Sweet Bay Supermarkets were here to present a check to our St. Vincent de Paul Society for $3,400 which matched the amount of pounds of food collected from our generous parishioners a few weekends ago. I’m thrilled that we were able to partner with this great company to feed the hungry of our community. They are also responsible for supplying all the turkeys during our annual Thanksgiving Day drive, spending hours with us in the distribution of the turkeys, making sure they are ready to be sent. Please support this great store on Bruce B. Downs and thank them for their support of our efforts. I would like to especially thank Christi Rogers, the new Sweet Bay Manager, for continuing this great relationship with us. Well, that is all for now. In the last week, I celebrated the Sacrament of Matrimony to three couples who have been preparing for the past six months. It’s always a joyous time and I feel so thrilled and privileged to be a small part of this intimate moment in their lives. Congratulations to all of you and may God continue to bless your union!

This past Saturday I celebrated 13 baptisms of children in their beautiful baptismal garments with their smiling faces. Little children are always so receptive to this grace, and some actually try to help me put the water on their head. One little, boy who was around a year old, wasn’t real happy with me pouring water on his head. He screamed his lungs out, and for the rest of the ceremony he wanted no part of me! He would turn away and scream every time I got near him. I wonder if that little boy will stress out every time he sees me in church and think I’m a mean ogre or something. I’ll have to watch for him the next time he’s here!

As many of you know, we had originally planned to have a Capital Campaign for a new church last year but due to the economic crisis, that was postponed until further notice. This additional time also has given us an opportunity to continue the design phase of our new church, and work through the many details that come with building construction. We hope to have the actual detailed design of the Church finished when we present it at the Capital Campaign functions in the near future. It already looks magnificent and I think all of you will be happy with what the committees have come up with while working with the architect. Keep praying that the economy will improve even more, and that many will be able to get back to work!

Well, that is all for now. Continue to enjoy the gift that God has given us in each other.

Peace,

Graduations, First Communions, Confirmations, etc.

Greetings to all of you!

Well, it’s beginning to look like the summer season has arrived with all the graduations, First Communions, Confirmations, etc., and although I’m not a fan of the hot weather, I have to say we certainly need the break that summer brings from the hustle and bustle of ordinary life. It’s a time to recharge and get to know our family and friends better by spending more time with them with weekend barbeques, vacation plans, and sporting events. However, I think summer is also a great time to get to know God in a deeper way by continuing our Mass attendance. It seems we take a vacation from Church, too, during these times and I know it really is important to maintain our weekly ritual so as not to miss out on the graces we receive. So let’s make a special effort not to forget about God during these summer months and take the time to increase our faith and love!

I invited my twin brother, Frank, to come and play golf with me last week in the Hunters Green Member-Guest tournament and I must say we hung in there despite my poor play. It seems everything I learn on the practice range suddenly abandons me when I get on the actual course. However, I did play some good holes to help the cause and it was interesting that he didn’t yell at me at all for my wayward shots. When we grew up together, I was always the brunt of his ire when I miscued on any sporting event and now there is silence. I wonder if age has caught up with him and now he’s become a “gentler” person is his old age. After all, he IS fifteen minutes older and needs to make a good example for me.

On another note, the time gets nearer for our two men in the Diaconate program to finally be ordained this October. Scott Paine and Jose Moranta are two gifted men who have answered the call by God and will serve the Church as Deacons in a few more months. Continue to keep them in your prayers and we look forward to their gift of Ministry. Watch the bulletin for more details as this great day arrives.

Well, that is all for now. Continue to enjoy the gift that God has given us in each other.

Peace,

Mother's Day 2009

Greetings to all of you!
These past two weeks have been pretty important in our parish life. First of all, we celebrated the death of our own Robert Rabil who has been an integral part of our great parish for a number of years. Rob succumbed to cancer two weeks ago at an early age of 48. He leaves his wife, Fern, and three children. It is hard to say how much we will miss his presence among us since he was so active in planning the future of St. Mark Parish. He was once the Chairman of our Finance Council until I had asked him to be the Chairman of the Steering Committee to help build our new church. Not only was he a well respected member of our parish, he was truly a friend to me and a cherished voice of reason in the midst of difficult decisions that needed to be faced. I’m not sure why he was called home at an early age, but I do know that I will miss him. I thank God for giving this great man to us for the short time he was here. May God bless and keep you, my dear friend. I ask that we all pray for his family as they go through this difficult time. Until we meet again, I say well done, good and faithful servant!

This weekend we also celebrate our Mothers and all the sacrifices and love they have given us in this life. Although we take them for granted on many occasions, we certainly realize their impact once they’re gone. May God bless our Mothers living and deceased as we celebrate this cherished weekend!

Last but not least, I did get the chance to play some golf last Friday and I have to say, although I didn’t score very well, I actually hit the ball more consistently than I have been. It took me almost 16 holes to lose my original ball and then on that hole, I lost two. Oh well, small miracles still do happen once in a awhile.

That is all for now, continue to enjoy the gift that God has given us in each other!

Peace,

Easter basket

Greetings to all of you!

As this is written, Holy Week and the celebrations of Easter have come and gone and I want to thank all of you who took part in the planning, decorating, and execution of this wonderful event. Again ,this year we had a profound experience of the last days of Christ leading up to the joy of the Resurrection. Without the dedication and self-sacrifice of those involved, this would not have happened. We congratulate all our new Catholics; I can still see the glow in their faces after that wonderful Easter Vigil night when they made their decision to be one with us! Continue to pray for them as they continue this new journey in their lives. What can I say about the new organ that was such a joy to hear and experience on that Easter Sunday! John Paul had that organ singing and it really added to the celebration and joy of this profound experience. To all of you I offer my thanks and blessings for a great Easter, and I look forward to even greater things to come!

Even though the Easter festivities have subsided, we continue to have other events that are also important in the mission of our parish. On May 8th, the youth of our parish will have an Art Auction to raise money for their trip to the National Convention. These trips are so important in their development as faith filled Catholics as they mingle with many youth from around the world who bring their own experiences of this wonderful God. Tickets for the Art Auction are being sold before and after the Masses. I hope you will be able to attend.

We also are having an important retreat day for married couples called, “Married and Loving It”, which will be put on by couples involved in the Marriage Encounter movement. Sign-up will be after the Masses in the next couple of weeks.

Well, that is all for now. I’m still going through my Easter basket full of chocolate candy including this solid chocolate rabbit! I’m hoping I will be able to swing a golf club around my big belly when it’s all over. Continue to love and pray for each other.

Peace,

He is Risen!

Greetings to all of you!

Alleluia! He is Risen! What a wonderful message of hope that the Lord had given us on this Easter morning over two thousand years ago and yet that message continues to heal broken hearts and spirits in our world today. Light has overcome the darkness. Despite our tough economic times, Christians all around the world are called to keep this hope alive in the small things we can do for each other. May this Easter Season bring hope to the lives that are hurting, and to those of us who are able to help may we be that light to them by modeling our lives after the deep love and sacrifice of the crucified and risen Christ!

This past week was the end of our weekly Lenten fish fry held by the Knights of Columbus and it seems that this year was a record year in sales! I think the word is getting around the community how great the fish frys are and what a good value it is to families. But more importantly, it brings about wonderful fellowship not only among our parishioners, but to the community that surrounds us! I would like to thank Grand Knight, Doug Gephart, and all the Knights who were involved in making this year such a great success. They worked very hard and it showed!

Last week, we also launched our new website! I’m thrilled by the look and ease of accessibility that the new website brings. I hope all of you are able to check it out. You will find wonderful information on all aspects of parish activity and answers to questions you may have about our Church. I would like to thank Chuck Rizzo, the Communications Committee, and David Larson who spent countless hours putting the design together. Well done!

Lastly, we also are launching a new concept to our church in which you will be able to donate online, thereby discontinuing the need to use of envelopes to make your weekly contribution. I used to forget my envelopes before coming to church on many occasions. Now I don’t have to worry about it since it is charged to my credit card on a weekly basis. This way I continue to keep God first in my life by practicing the treasure portion of stewardship without the worry of trying to remember the envelope. It’s very easy to do, just go to our website for information and directions, or just call us at the office.

Well, that is all for now! May the Lord continue to offer you hope in this blessed Easter Season!

Peace,

Dedication of the Church's New Organ

March 29th
What a wonderful display of music last Sunday afternoon as we dedicated the new organ to God. Our own, Dr. John Paul Cappa, wowed the crowd with his musical abilities performing various works by the Masters of Organ music. The great sound that came from this phenomenal instrument was incredible and all who attended were so pleased that something this good came out of New Tampa, (a play on words there)!. Hopefully, we will have more events such as this in the future and highlight St. Mark as one of the music centers of the area.
As of this writing there will be one more opportunity to enjoy the great Fish Fry held every Friday during Lent by the Knights of Columbus. We have had record sales this year and they now have it all down to a science. Hopefully, next year we are thinking of having available baked fish for our “fried-challenged” individuals, (of which, I am one) so more can participate. Many of those who have attended this year’s fish fry can attest to how good it really is, so don’t miss this last chance for the year.
I did finally get out on the golf course the other day enjoying this beautiful weather! Although my game still has a way to go, I did see some signs of progress. I think I strained a muscle in my back from swinging to hard or maybe it was too much? Anyway, it was great to get out and I hope to do so again before the hot weather gets here.
Speaking of hot weather, I realize we all like to wear comfortable dress when we come to Church, but sometimes it seems that what we’re wearing is more appropriate for the beach rather than a House of God. I’m thrilled that people come, but I just hope, out of respect and dignity for the profound event that is happening at Mass, that we dress more appropriately. There, I said it! Now don’t throw tomatoes at me! Maybe next week, I’ll address the issue of leaving early which may fit in with the passion and death of Jesus during Holy Week.
As you read this I will be on retreat this weekend to get ready for Easter so I will pray for all of you!
Well, that is all for now, continue to enjoy the gift that God has given us in each other.
Peace,
Fr. The venue here is so perfect for these events and many of our own parishioners attended the event filling themselves with roasted pork and chicken, along with some great ice cream! It was a feast almost comparable to our own fish frys during Lent. Thanks to all of you who made the day a rounding success and especially to Mike Wallace, of the Friday morning Rotary, for his continued interest and hard work in making all this happen!
This Sunday is the start of the “Scrutinies” for those who are to be baptized during the Easter Vigil. The Scrutinies are a centuries old rite in which the Catechumens renounce their old ways of life and allow the light of Christ to enter their hearts. There will be three of these moments in the next few Sundays and they will occur at different Masses. It is also a reminder for each of us to “scrutinize” our own lives so we can be more like Christ. Continue to pray for our Catechumens and Candidates as they make their final journey to full communion in the Catholic Church.
Well, that is all for now. Continue to enjoy the gift that God has given to each other.

Peace,
Fr. Over 26 teenagers participated in an all day event that helped them to learn to trust what God can do for them. I was impressed by their respectfulness and piety as they experienced various issues that they will face as they become confirmed men and women. We also have some very talented youth leaders who basically ran the retreat for their peers and did an outstanding job making the day go by so well. It just goes to show how a little time and effort given to a young man or woman can have such a profound effect on their lifes. I’m so proud of them all and especially the adults who were there to help. Mary Ann Weigel has done an outstanding job with our youth and we are so fortunate to have her working with them. She could always use more adult volunteers for this important ministry so if you would like to work with youth, give her a call. You will certainly be blessed.

Last weekend, 26 men also experienced a changing event in their lives by participating in the Christ Renews His Parish (CRHP) weekend. It’s wonderful to see men share their spiritual and life’s journey with other men and thereby see how the Good Lord works in our lives. The women are participating this weekend and I can already see the fire of the Holy Spirit in the lives of those who attend. I hope you will be able to attend one yourself in the near future. Ask any of those involved and you will hear for yourself.

I’m also very proud of four young men in our parish who have been awarded the great honor of “Eagle Scout.” They are Brian Guidry, Eric Christensen, Alex Presse, and Austin Shin who are part of Troop 148 and meet here at St. Mark. It’s pretty unusual for four people to be awarded this high honor at one time and to think that all are from our parish is simply amazing! Congratulations to our four new recipients! Well, that is all for now. Continue to enjoy the gift that God has given us in each other.

Peace,

  Fr.
